i get my cuttlefish from a pet shop, its sold loose, not in packets, is there anyway of getting salt out to a snail safe level? me and my bf are insane and lick cuttlefish to see if its salty lol. and this bit we got tasted salty perhaps. i've heard of people boiling it so the salt comes out into the boiling water thus lowering salt concentration in the cuttlefish.

I doubt it will have salt in it. I always feed mine what I buy bulk in the petshop and they're fine. You could boil it I suppose, but I find that makes mine go funny. You'd have to scr@pe the top layer off or put it in the oven to dry out afterwards as the top layer goes all brown and mushy. I doubt it'd do much anyway because the cuttlefish will still be in the water so will still have salt on it.

Yeah but the idea is that it lowers the concentration of the salt. Coz the salt is water soluble so dissolves into the water, so the salt that was originally just concentrated in the cuttlefish, is now in the huge volume of water and the cuttlefish, vastly diluted, specially if you do this twice. There still will be a small amount of salt in it, but like every animal/insect/mollusc snails do need some salt, just not sure how much salt is fatal to a snail.
but brown and mushy sounds eww.
I just have severe paranoia over my snails, they use what we give them, and if what we give them is fatal we took their life. This is the woman that hates killing anything except for food purposes. Like I hate flies, but killing 1 just coz i think they're mucky and annoying just seems a needless waste of life. lol

Yeah, I know it's soluble into the water... But the problem is the water will then be all over the cuttle absorbing into in.
But it's not a problem really, no-one I know does it.

surely if the snail touched the cuttle fish and found it was salty it would move away from it anyway? Or at least not slime all over it until it dehydrates and dies?

you can soak them in the bath, overnight, they shouldn't go odd and that way and you can be sure to remove most of the salt, if there is any there. as flutterby said if it is salty you are lowering the concentration via salt disolving in the water, yes some will still be in the cuttlefish but think how much of the water will be in the cuttlefish relative to how much water there is in the bath or whatever you soak it in, that's how much the salt is diluted by! do it a couple of times if you want, the larger the amount of water you soak it in the less salt there will be in it. i always soak mine in the bath to be sure and have had no problems with a bulk buy off ebay. but i also offer other calcium sources which they take in preference, namely limestone flour on their food and little calcium blocks i make up with a variety of calcium stuff from Dusk and some ground up egg shell. they LOVE those blocks.

I've started putting limestone flower on mine's food as well, was just worried they weren't getting enough and if it's on their food they have to eat it My snails started getting these weird bits on their shells, but I think its normal coz ive seen it on a few other snails, its like lighter bits of shell, a bit like dried skin, but shell....... if that makes sense. Was horrified when i 1st saw it but then looked up about it, and discovered that long as its not like a hole right through its fine. So slightly relieved but still wondering about y the lines are there. Its shell so boosting their calcium intake is all i can do for them.
