So I recently acquired a bunch of albino Tiger Snail babies. And as you may already know from my participating in the "scrambled egg" and similar threads, I give all my snails a protein snack about once a week or so. These days it's most often egg based, but it might also be meat based depending on if I have unseasoned good quality meat around.
Anyway, to the point. I learned the babies had never had protein. I know that in this situation I must introduce it very carefully because else they'll get sick. Kind of like if a vegan starts eating meat again, there will be lots of digestive problems if they don't take it carefully. I was wondering how to do it gently enough as some of the babies are so tiny. I came up with this idea:
I fed some egg to my bigger snails, who are all used to having protein. Later I took their poops and gave them to the Tiger babies alongside their usual vegs, knowing it's normal Tiger behaviour to eat other snails' poops, hoping that it wouldn't be so dramatic for their system when it's once been eaten already and there'll be beneficial bacteria too that hopefully will help. Yeah, stinky and messy business, but what wouldn't I do to possibly help out some baby snails.
They ate all the poops, as expected. I'm thinking of repeating this once a week for a few weeks, and only then letting the babies have some egg or meat without having a bigger snail poop it out first.
I'll be following the babies' health of course, but how does this idea sound like to you?
In the fulica tank, egg seems to always get eaten at least twice. The snails run for each others' eggy poops and devour them greedily, so I was thinking it must have some benefits or else they wouldn't crave it. Other poops don't get eaten like that, I wish they did lol.
Hoping I've done this right,
with fingers covered in snail poop,
Etana.
(Kidding about having my fingers still covered in it. )
