Thanks guys. Yeah I also have pictures of the snail without the shell, but it's available by request as not everyone would want to see it. I've since heard of a parasite that can cause this, but i don't feel this was the case here as none of the other snails were affected, and it was quite some time ago now. I'd be interested to read about the other causes of this Has this happened with one of your snails too Crossless? It's a sad thing. xxx Yup Feebix you've seen this thread before mate.

Never happened to me, but on Finnish snail forum I have read from few cases. One of reasons could be that muscle which is conneted to shell sometime got hard hit and hasn't healed and later been paralysed? Here is something about mantle collapse www.petsnails.co.uk/problems/mantle_collapse.html#start

I relise I'm replying quite a while after your post, but just wanted to say sorry, it's horrible knowing a snail is suffering. One of my fulicas suffered a torn mantle was nowhere near as bad as yours though. I kept her in a very low container with high humidity for a few weeks and with a bit of tlc she has made a full recovery

Very glad that your snail recovered. That's quite a bad tear so it's great to hear of the happy ending x
