Yeah, I don't know what it is this time. He hasn't been pregnant or laid eggs. He just started deep retracting some days ago. Other snails can get him to come out with pats, kisses and even light rasps on the shell, but he goes back in deeper each time. I last saw him eat two days ago when another snail was touching him, and certainly not normally. I offered him egg yesterday, and he wouldn't touch it. There's a lot of thick slime around his breathing hole and he's slowly shrinking. Now it seems he has trouble keeping his eyes out. He still dances under misting so I'm hoping to get some water into his mouth. As far as I can tell he's at most 1½ years old. That's supposed to be a weird age to go. Then again he's had a problematic life ever since the lid fell on him last autumn, and I'm getting ready to say goodbye anyway.

I guess that's it. Before the earlier post I'd taken Halonen and Tauno to see him, because he's liked them both the most, but I couldn't but observe that he wouldn't eat anymore, even with them around. When I'd noticed he wasn't okay, I'd put him in the smaller, warmer tank, and for a moment he seemed to get a lot better. Then he started deep retracting again. This morning he had snailed to the pear shaped hamster hide after lots of pats, kisses and rasps from Paavo. He had then come to peek back out looking really sad, so I decided to let him see his best friends. He did seem to drink from the misting bottle and the tap, but then he remained in a strange up-bent position and hardly reacted anymore. However, Tauno gave him a huge kiss on the face when he was that way. Instantly after that, Taavetti went into his shell and hasn't come back out. It was as though he was waiting to kiss his friend goodbye. As I mentioned in another thread, Taavetti kissed Halonen all over yesterday, on her face, back and shell. I put him back in the tank, so Halonen and Tauno can stay with him for his last moments if they want. Sorry my writing is all over the place. I've been so scared that he won't make it so many times - when the lid fell on him, when he got a bit too cold, when he had a miscarriage, the awful pregnancy a while ago that very nearly took his life...and he always pulled through, sometimes just barely, but he did. I don't even know what it was that did this now. It is almost ironic that there didn't seem to be anything unusual when this started. I definitely don't do full soil changes (I recently mixed in a bit of new coir, though) and there are no harmful pests that I could see, only some springtails, and then there are those white little wormies that eat snail poop but I don't ever see them looking like they may be living inside the snails. Plus everyone else is doing great. Meh...and I have errands to run.

Now his head is poking out of his shell again. Sigh. I put him on a food dish with crushed blueberries that Halonen is eating right now. I don't expect him to last much longer though.

Ahh HELL ! I thought he was doing ok again so I'm really really sorry to hear this Etana I know how much he means to you. Will he eat any mashed up fruit? I added some Spirilina to some mashed up fruit and that did help one of my snails. I cant think of anything else to suggest, but I really do feel for you because I know what its like. Virtual hug to both you and Taavetti and I'm sending good vibes n energy your way, please let us know what happens. I may not answer straight away as were having such crazy weather with high winds and Thunderstorms but I will check back here when I can. Hang in there Zorst

Yeah I thought he was ok too... I couldn't get him to eat anything today, I think he's still alive somewhere deep inside that shell but as far as I could tell even Halonen couldn't get him to come out anymore once he went back to sleep after my last post. I may still try a little bit of something tonight but he was so weak earlier already, I doubt it'll help.
Virtual hugs back.

There his little face is again. That was surprising. I really have to sleep but I'm leaving some food next to him in case a miracle happens. I'm not expecting it though.

He had actually moved at night and fallen over in the nearest food dish. How weird. I'm putting him next to food again.

Huh, I saw him push out one eye and look at me. I also think he may be attempting to eat. I'll be doing what I can but I still don't have my hopes high.

He's gone.
I just find it so strange that he pushed one eye out to look at me just a few hours ago. Then the next time I saw him he was totally upside-down, I don't understand how. He has no signs of life anymore.
I do wonder what does this.

Thank you Jo.
I'm watching Halonen and Tauno deal with the news and it's actually helping me, weird as it is. I placed them next to each other and Taavetti in front of them an hour ago, and they clearly did eye stalk signs and many facial expressions to each other. Tauno explored all around and put his head deep inside the shell too while Halonen looked like she was in shock. They're still pressed together, Halonen curling her face up more and more. I hope she's ok, she did love Taavetti in her own snaily way and I have seen a snail mourn before.
I think I'd prefer them to eat his body so it'll be a boost for them and I won't have to touch it. Fingers crossed for that.
A good thing I have a baby snail called Taavetti II the Great (named a while ago already) because it's been my favourite snail name here. The little guy has a funny story but that'll be the matter of another thread.
