I'm usually very careful, but I accidentally dropped a teenage fulica today from maybe 90cm high. Her shell wasn't damaged at all (phew!!), but she deep retracted and didn't come out for two and a half hours. I was worried she'd ruptured internal organs. I tried to get her to come out for a bit, but then put her in the tank to rest.
Eventually Tauno's persistent eye stalk & feeler patting paid off. He had to do it for maybe 30-45 mins on her shell, but still, it was the only thing that worked at all. That's how it often is with snails, they respond the best to the touch of another snail. He's still sitting with her. I hope she'll be fine by tomorrow morning.

I am sure she will Etaha love, it is so easily done though. When I take their lid off in the morning to re feed and generally do my bit as their maid, I am always careful because you can guarantee that at least one person is going to be sleeping on the roof. I am sure she was just shaken up for a minute and I have no doubt that Mauno will have made her feel as right as rain again. Please try not to worry sweetie.

Glad she's ok, I had one the other day when a large wild garden snail got blown off the roof of the 2 story part of the house n bounced on the path beside me.
Bless it I was thinking its shell would be smashed n it would have deeply retracted , but no not a mark or scratch on that snail.
I still bought it inside n its now eating well n happily with some friends. Man that was one lucky snailer.

Despite our treating them with kid gloves, I think that they are quite hardy little things. I am glad she is OK love.

Wow Zorst, what a flight that snail had! Our wild snails outside are all hibernating. That's all good, they should be, but it's so empty walking outside when there aren't little eyes looking up at me from the sides of the streets. And yes, my snail was fine in the morning. Another anecdote for what we've seen many times - a shocked snail benefits from having a friend who'll sit there giving gentle pats and reassuring it's ok to come out.

Oh Etana love, I bet you really do miss them. Our snailies are lucky being in 5 star accommodation all year round and being nice and warm all the time. I am glad little one is OK Etana love, perhaps a friend sat up with her providing cups of tea and other comforts LOL!!

Nice! Tauno proves that snails care about each other.

Yup GTS Tauno already had quite a score in helping other snails, really. I've seen him stop eating his sweet potato dinner and run over to push his own tiny babies out of the bath tub. He also offered the tip of his shell to a snail who kept falling back down into his burrow, and pulled him up (though that was so Tauno could try to woo him afterwards, LOL). And now this, so impressive of him to sit there comforting the other snail for so long. It's funny how he went from being a terrified little baby who took ages to do anything (that's how I got him - he wouldn't move, he just sat still and stared in front of himself) to a very active, pretty snail who has a lot of creative ideas and who also looks after other snails. I really think there's more to their personalities than it first seems.

What a gorgeous little snailie he sounds, the good person in the snailie community. I love to hear about how he helps the others even if he does have a slightly ulterior motive LOL!! I think they develop the way we do Etana love, what they are like as children isn't necessarily going to be what they are like as grown ups.

Yes, Tauno is a good snail, though he also outsmarts me with his ideas now and then. I had another snaily accident here, I had nothing to do with it this time. I found a snail had fallen headfirst into the soil so that his shell edge had cut into his back, and he was unable to straighten himself. He was limp, covered in abnormal mucus, but conscious - there were dark marks on his skin but no obvious flesh wounds. He didn't do anything on my hand but when I carefully put him back into the tank, he snailed into a hide to rest. Poor fellow.

Hnmm...the snail who fell yesterday and was injured by his own shell is dead now. I guess he broke something.

Yeah, now I worry there's something else going on that caused the falling and the snail actually died from that. I hope it really was an accident.
