My snails do exactly that when they're exhausted. Just keep paying attention to him and offer extra tasty foods, he hopefully should return to sleeping more normally.

Oh no, could it be caused by the miscarriage? I'be added an extra heat mat so the tank is around 26C and given him strawberries, which he likes is there anything more I can do?

It could be, it's a bit hard to say for 100% sure but it has sounded like it was hard on his body. The heat mat and strawberries sound good, also make sure he can get to a bath. Keep us updated on how he's doing.

Hi etana thanks for the help I have no idea what's going on tbh, I picked him up this morning and he was very retracted but I left him as I was running late for lectures. I was pretty worried about him all day, got home and he looks right as rain, currently sliming round annoying the others like days of old! I have no idea if it's possible for snails to bring themselves out of deep retraction, or of he has something completely different like exhaustion or just being weird? Took this pic of him annoying Dumbledore, who jusy wants to sleep but has to be kissed and hugged by Jim instead

Lovely pic, I've probably mentioned it before but my fulica have the same strawberry house, they love it. I've seen snails recover from sleeping really deep in their shells many times, they needed some extra attention and pampering. Some took several days to return to normal. With the fatal "deep retraction syndrome" they turn sideways, stop eating, and shrink away on top of the retraction itself. It's a shame that that illness has such a name, as snails have different reasons to deep retract that aren't as dangerous and can be helped.

The little ones love it yeah I just assumed deep retraction was deep retraction, but it's good to know it isn't always. Jim stayed actime last night and is now eating all the egg, I'll have to put more in for the others

Hi guys, thought I'd give some news on Jim. He's still here and being awkward as usual he's still retracting about an inch into his shell, and seems more reluctant to come out these days, even with the other snails badgering, and when he does he appears rather thin. Currently he's in the warmer tank with all the protein alongside Cecil, as they're both a bit thin but appear to get along which is always good! Jim has buried himself twice now, in the manner that other snails do to lay eggs, but no eggs, I think he might be trying but just not getting it right for whatever reason. To combat the thinness, as he doesn't like eating protein with other snails around (Awkward snail) I've been giving him protein outside the tank once a week, and if he still doesn't eat I've started bathing him in a mixture of fish food, mushy dog biscuits, sweet potato, and spirulina. He does seem to gin body mass but also seems to loose it about 2 days after :l The dog biscuits and sweet potato are mainly in the bath as he likes eating something while bathing and both contain a lot of protein. Sorry for the long update! It can probably be condensed into same old same old, but a bit more so. xx

We love updates, don't you apologize for making them! Poor old Jim - but I love to see him so pampered. He's so lucky to be with you and I'm glad to hear he has a friend in Cecil. I wonder if he'd allow you to check inside his breathing hole with a led lamp so you could see if he has eggs? Not that you can really help him if he does, but you'd know more. Not all snails let you look, though.

Thanks for the updates love, that is what this site is all about so I agree with Etana, please don't apologise for making them. Jim is gorgeous and it is so nice to see him being pampered and has a friend. I have a couple of snailies at the moment who are burying themselves but no eggs so I just wondered if they are trying to get some personal space. Please let us know if Cecil has eggs hunni, if you are able to find out.
Hugs Jo xx
