Oh sweetie, I just wish he could make a full recovery but at least he is enjoying some snaily affection whilst he is here and has eaten a little bit. Thank you for the updates.
Ok now he is definitely gone. He passed the night after I took those pics of him and Tauno. At least he must have felt love and friendship till the end. That's such a different way to go to what he'd have had without being rescued. He'd have been alone, not even knowing there are other snails out there who could love him.
I'm really sorry to hear he snailed to the great cabbage patch in the sky Etana, But he really did know love from you and the other snails as well as good food and to be cared for properly. Despite this happening you all did the best for him and he'll have known that. He was really able to live as all snails should with you and that was the greatest gift you could have given him.
Tough as it is on you , you did the right thing by taking him in and giving him a home with all the love and that chance to be a real snails which is a good thing, so don't be sad.

Thanks Zorst... Yeah, I'll never forget how he first was shocked to meet another snail, but later was so thrilled to be released into the big tank, he was joining in a failing orgy in mere seconds (ok maybe minutes, but it was the first thing he did). The sheer joy there, what an experience for both of us.
I actually don't think anymore that he was ill, because he did all basic functions to the end and never showed movement that indicated pain, he was just weak. He may have been one of those snails with a bad start to life (he was a pet store snail originally, before he was bought to the home I got him from) and thus possibly had a naturally shorter lifespan of about 3 years, dying of "old age" issues.
The bout of released constipation wasn't him after all, there was more in that tank after I put him back into the fulica tank, turns out Maija's tummy was upset after lots of aestivation (she's all right now). After Putkonen re-started eating and got his system working a bit, he did these tiny little poops till the very end.
The way Tauno helped him on his last evening was very special, I'd never seen a snail rock another snail like that. Also when Putkonen stopped the little eating he did, he went back into his shell by himself. Then Tauno let go of him for the first time, and gestured at me. I returned them to the tank, and by morning he was gone.
What amazing little creatures they really are. I'm so moved. It's hard to not be sad but I know I helped him and he got to feel things he wouldn't have felt without me, that's a lot of consolation.
I've followed this topic throughout Etana, and you have my deepest condolences. Take comfort in the happiness and love he felt throughout his time with you.
It is totally amazing when you really look at how they interact with each other and how much they do care in there own way. People miss all of this because there just snails so don't really pay much attention to them. They miss so much because watching these guys at night and especially Marrows antics has me laughing more often than not.
Your snails all have a good life and that is something you should take great comfort and joy in. He got to experience it all in the short time he was with you and how to really live as a snail should.
Unfortunately all to many shop bought snails as we know get a bad start in life, that's something we can only take into account when we get a snail that has come to us with that kind of history, we cant make up for that bad start all we can do is give them the best whilst they are with us.

Oh Etana love, I am sitting here in tears, that is so very sad. I agree though, he had a good life with you and learned what love is so he can take it with him. They are truly amazing little creatures and I don't think I will ever be without them. Lots of love to you hunni.
