Has anyone had any success grinding oyster shell flakes? I got some recently and tried them in a pepper mill grinder but they wrecked the pepper mill. Tried bashing them with a rolling pin and also not much luck. I'm reluctant to try my blender as I think it will end up wrecked like the pepper mill. Has anyone any other suggestions please? I don't think my snailies would eat them as they are and I have a few small ones so don't want to try in case they choke my little darlings. Thanks Jo

I usually use a big hammer and smash my oystershells on a paving stone outside, works very well(even though pieces will fly everywhere ;D .....safety goggles needed).

My hubby wouldn't let me loose with a hammer, he only let me loose last week (after knowing him for 7 years) with his beloved drill to do my new tank and that's because he didn't want to do it. I find DIY tools and my fingers don't get on very well. I tried a rolling pin earlier, the bag split and they went everywhere. Then it started raining and the bits i've managed to crush have went to mush, oops think I'm jinxed. My hubby thinks i've lost the plot (he's probably right). I think I'll buy them ground next time it will be easier and less painfull. x

The rolling pin thing works, just don't smash them in a plastic bag........wrap them in a tea towel, then bash away!!

you will find it easier to buy the oystershell sold for cage birds, it is very fine and even tiny snails eat it.

That's great, never thought of that. I'm assuming most pet shops will sell it or might have a look on ebay. Can you recommend anywhere? Thanks

Hi again, I've managed to get some ground oyster shell but it looks like a fine grit. Will it be ok to give to my snailies or will it need further grinding to a powder? I got this from my local pet shop they sell 1kg for 50p and I got 4 10" cuttle fish for £3 cheap! Thanks Jo x
