They sell small tubs of earth worms at my local fishing tackle shop, just wandered if it would be okay to have them in my fulica tank??
Thanks, Simon.

Yup, but you might as well just get some from the garden, keep them in a tub for two or three weeks to clean them and put those in....

They help keep the compost clean so its worth popping some in for that reason alone

Didn't want to make a new thread, so thought I;d post here I'm think about getting some to put in my Fuli tank, just wondering how I should go about making sure they are clean before I put them in? And also, will they eat the left over food? x Don't want to have to go through the whole mite situation again -.-

Grab yourself a few worms from the garden, I started out with nine and I have hundreds now. Pop them in a plastic tub with some lettuce and spray the compost. Leave them in there for two weeks, bear in mind they like to eat rotten veg so make sure they get it but use lettuce, nothing from the garden or that defeats the object here. After two weeks any nasties will have passed through the worms with the lettuce and they`re ready to be put in with your snails. Give it a few months and you`ll start seeing more and more worms, I was amazed to find out worms lay eggs ! With three little worms in each egg. ;D The do wonders for the quality of the compost because thier poo is well... compost. Yes they`ll eat rotten food and snail poo. I wouldn`t be without my worms or my woodlice, they keep my tanks in excellent condition ;D

Oooh, woodlice too aye? Tempting . . . Will the worms not have any mites on them then, or will a short dip in some water get wrid of them? x

Read last night that earth worms don't like much of heat. But you can buy from some places worms that are used in worm compost they can stand warmersoil better. Hmm.. I think i try first fishing store, but I don't buy worms yet. Still don't have new tank it's too cold dad to use power tools. So I shall wait more. :/ How worms can have mites? Worms are most of the time under the soil and mites can't stand dark places? if you can somehow get rid of mites with moonlight lamps so I think they don't like dark too much.

Hmmh.. I got idea. I could buy few more worms that I would need and make for snails old food bits own worm compost. I always forget to take them to trash right away and i don't usually like to put snails old food in kitchens bucket then kitchen will be full of flies and snails food is really mushy because it's been in warm and moist terrarium. If i do that compost for snails, have hide it some where if friends comes over they are not too keen about worms. I have read that worms neither don't like onios or citrus fruits so it's easy to remember that snails and worms like the same food.

Oh my I just read that for worms their own poop is toxic for them so have to keep adding soil/peat for them time to time. And change it some times. Soils sand and little bit clay help them digestion better. So I will ask some soil from my sister when she makes yearly soil change to plants. Sadly it was Finnish article, but I guess if you try to find info about worm composting you would find that piece of information too. And change sometime whole substrate. So they donät die. o.O I read too that those Eisenia fetida can be found in wild, but can be easily be mistaken to earth worm. So I guess I have some digging to do on summer/spring. And I have to take with me some pictures for identifing then better.

I'd rather clean out the tank myself than have little bugs crawling around. That would creep me out!
