I just went to check on my octona, and the smallest of the three was just lying there in two pieces, still moving and everything. the top half of the shell was halfway across the jar, I have no idea how it happened, thick layer of coir, no hard objects in the tank or anything. I opened the jar and scooped him out, I couldn't leave him lying there, but I have no idea how it happened. I feel awful, poor little thing must have been in so much pain. I've added a picture so you can see what I mean, hes definately gone now, and i'm going to go bury him in a minute. I know some people might think its stupid to get upset over such a tiny snail, but I really am. poor wee Merry.

ARGH!!!! Oh That's awful, poor Merry! Well I was going to suggest trying to seal the end with plaster or even try aqarium sealent at a push, but I am wondering if anything of the snail's body is still in the top half?
Oh goodness. I'm not sure about the best course of action.
On the plus side it's believed that snails do not feel anywhere near as much pain as mammals, but I know that's only a small consolation.

I've decided to freeze him, I really don't think anything can be done and its not fair to make him suffer. I just hope it'll be quick and he won't feel anymore pain.

Odd, that doesn`t look like two halves of a small snail to me? It looks like a blob of something and then a small snail, I take it you are certain he`s somehow come in half? Blimey, sorry to hear that

Blimey, sorry to hear that I am certain, its a rubbish pic, but that blob was his front half, and the other part was the rest. You could see where the break would have joined, andhis insides coming out and everything.

I have noticed if there is unfluffy and very wet (water makes soil little bit heavier) soil on top of snail. I have few times needed to help a.fulicas to dig them up from soil 'cos they got stuck in soil 'cos it's so heavy and impenetrable. So now I regulary fluff up flat soil when it goes down and collapse really tight soil.
Ihave heard that invertebrate do feel pain some how it makes them feel some how very unpleasant.

Oh. I'm so sorry for your loss. You did the right thing, as I was reading this thread I was going to suggest you should freeze him but you already did. It's such a shame to loose a pet. How old was he/she?
