Hi all sorry to be a pain I know i keep asking what sound like silly questions but i want my snails to be happy and comfortable. I have just bought some hemiplecta distincta I have a lovily little tank for these but unsure on if they need to be on moss or coir. Any help would be fab all i know so far is the babys can be hard to raise. Thanks Stix. x They require similar conditions to giant african land snails, such as fulica. Moss is optional. Now I can't say for sure that this is a requirement, but mine like their tank to be in partial sunlight for some of the day. Weird as it sounds they sunbathed, appeared to seek the sunny spot. It's a risky thing to advise putting a tank in partial sun as we all know tanks can heat up and be like an oven if you're not careful - so it's just something to note but be cautious about. Mine were not active when I put their tank in shade, even though the tank was still heated, and were happier when I put them back in partial sun. As far as I'm aware no-one has raised babies in captivity. Some hatched but as far as I know they all died. I could be wrong, and it would be very interesting and hopeful to hear otherwise. They're a joy to keep, lovely species.

I am buying juvs from some one on ebay they hatched last year he shows in his pictures one of his babies from this year i emailed him to ask how he kept them but got no reply as of yet. I will get a tank ready with coir and a little bit of cork bark will put a little bit of moss at one end so they have the option. I will put the tank in one of the back rooms they get a bit of sun first thing in the morning when it is cooler. I can't wait to get them another one to mark off my wanted list but must stop buying soon. Thanks for the info. x

OOOOH OOOOH OOOOH! that's exciting! Someone's managed it then?
How large are they? Are they truely jeveniles?
We did have a seller here (gone now - long story), who managed to breed them. He sold the babies within a week or so - much too young. As far as I'm aware they all died.
They're getting less common in the wild so it's fantastic that they're breeding in captivity. Oooh I must investigate (wants some!)
