One of the snails was handled inappropriately, and dropped on the floor of the class. A student thought she was tough enough to carry one, but got freaked out when it started tasting her.
I don't think this will be lethal, but I feared the worst. It looks like we got off lucky: the crack in poor Jorge's shell ends just before the mantle, a tiny sliver of it pokes out from inside. It looks awful, but I think he'll recover.
I would like to know the proper techniques for assuring a safe recovery. I've posted some pictures to show you guys the extent of the damage. I infer that there's no immediate threat to his health, as he's crawling around with his cage mates right now. Please advise: how can I make him comfortable and healthy again.

Hiya, I can't see any pictures, but fropm what yopu have described it doesn't sound bad. They are very good at repairing their own shells when the damage is fairly minor. The thing you need to check is to see if the mantle has come loose from the shell at all, as this is more serious, depending upon severity of the detatchment. With just a shell chip near the mantle you don't need to do anything special except provide plenty of calcium (if you can).

The pellets sound like a very good idea, perhaps you could crush some and place on top of some food? The mantle is fine, it's not come away. You see where the body joins the shell? If there was detatchment you would see it, though I don't know how to describe it otherwise. It's minor and will soon be fine, please don't worry x

I'm not a worrier by nature, nor am I someone who is naturally inclined to take care of people or animals. Something about these snails, though, really grows on me. I think it's that they're invertibrates. I never really liked animals with Higher brain function, people included. Fortunately, these snails seem to have exactly the right view on life.

One day later, and already I can see new shell growth...these guys are remarkable. I took measurements...the shell should be totally grown back if it grows at this rate for 3 days. I'll post a picture
