It's been three weeks now, my snails are definitely growing and seem more lively than when first captured from the wild: I think they like it here.
I am located in a part of the world that does not have a lot of conventional foodstuffs, but I've found a lot of food that my snails are CRAZY for. I thought I'd post a thread with the diet I've got them on, for suggestions that you folks can impliment if you're looking for some variety. At the same time, you can tell me if this program is good for the snails.
So:
- no fruit: I keep them in a classroom, and for the students, they need to look cute and appealing. So: the less fauna in the cage, the better. Taking away watermelon, oranges, pears, and bananas reduces fruit flies and unappetizing leftovers. If you're just keeping them at home, this might be less of a problem, but all my snails "favorite foods" have been veggies.
- Collard Greens: They love this stuff, they smell it from the opposite size of the cage and come crawling. These plants are calcium rich and leafy, and very easy to cultivate out here...I suspect they eat it in the wild. - Broccoli and Kale: Related to the greens. - French Beans: the most high-calcium food available to them. I didn't know if they'd like this stuff, but I just tried it and...success! - corn and oatmeal: they're not crazy about this stuff but I use it every once in a while. - Sprouts: easy to grow and really cheap.

Yes these are good and nutricious choices for the snails, and thanks for the suggestions. What kind of Sprouts? Do you mean Brussel sprouts or general bean sprouts? Kale is certainly an excellent choice

Maybe. It's just bean curd isn't it? It's been processed so perhaps not as good as the real beans but then again dog bisuits are heavily processed too and they're ok to give.

actually, I haven't yet. These snails have strange eating habits, I blame the fact that they're wild caught, and don't recognize some plants as food sources. They just pick at citrus fruits, apples, and baby corn...they never eat much of it. They don't touch oatmeal or chicken feed at all, and they'll only eat sweet potato if there's nothing else to eat. But whenever I put collared greens, kale, lettuce, or french beans in there, they practically rocket to their food dish and eat them down to the stems in minutes.

I don't give mine citrus fruit, can you get hold of goldfish flakes? Mix with boiling water (or cold but boiling faster) into a paste and they love it! I only discovered it this weekend but is def the new favourite!
