Anyone have suggestions for fighting fruit flies? I know they're not bothering the snails, but I want to keep the fly population in our classroom at a minumum. Swapping out sweet fruits seemed like a logical decision, but they're still swarming the tank, feeding off veggies. I could clean the tank...but I just cleaned it two days ago, and I don't want to go through the hassle of buying dirt again if there's an easier option.

Fly paper hung near the snail tanks is good. If you want to keep them out of the snail tank (which will hopefully keep them away altogether) then try tightly covering the lid or any other holes in the snail tank with some light chiffon, pantyhose or other thin "breathable" material. This should hopefully mean that the flies can't get into the tank but air can still circulate, and if you combine it with some fly paper nearby to trap any flies trying to sneak in, then hopefully they'll be gone before long. There's also some ideas here: www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Fruit-Fliesbut I'm not sure if some of them will just encourage more fruit flies to come in anyway.
