Very nice looking snails, I have to do some tank cleans over the weekend. Marrow has totally turned the bulldozers tank upside down with the help of Maple and Red, so there's is just a basic tidy up n replanting of the poor old St Patrick's cabbage plants that have virtually all been dug up and strewn around the place. The tank that has the Baby bulldozers in needs a good clean out as for some unknown reason it has the white worm's / nematodes back. They must have come in on one of the big cabbage leaves despite me washing all food that go's in the tanks. I've got some baby snails and eggs in separate tubs in this tank so i need to make sure they are all safe n clear of these things as well. I don't like doing a major tank clean if I don't have to but sometimes I have to . Zorst

Great photos! I rarely clean my tanks at all, unless there is a pest problem. I just take out old food, pick up poo and wipe down walls.

Awww, they're so lovely! Another lazy cleaner here, I just remove poops and moldy foods (or food that has flies on it) and wipe the walls if there are no other problems. Just yesterday I spotted a few nematodes too, must have been that one of the well-meaning people here didn't wash some veg as obsessively as they should have when giving the snails a snack. Most of them should go away if they don't have poop and rotting veg to chew on though, I don't wish to change much of the soil.

LOVE THEM! I keep meaning to make a proper post about cleaning tanks but yes you are right grime is good! They need bacterial gut flora in order to digest their food, this comes from their environment, fresh substrates don't have what they need so if you constnatly clean the tank and replace the substrate you remove their gut flora. there were experiments done by pliny i think (i'll try and find the paper later) where he starved some snails, fed but regularly cleaned out other snails and snails he fed and kept dirty. The regularly cleaned ones responded exactly like the starved ones and died. There was another expeiment where they disected them after keeping them too clean and their guts had actually decreased - reducing the ability to absorb food.

That's all very interesting muddy Rabbits also need bacterial gut flora to digest their food, and unfortunately I lost one of my dear rabbits because the vet ignored this.

Really? That's so sad! I have 2 buns, one of which gut flora was messed up and had caused her belly to swell until she was dieing. I got her to the vet emediently and was syringe feeding her every two hours. She's better now and definitely has attitude!

I think my rabbit would have had better odds if I hadn't brought her to the vets! Just shows how important gut flora is for everyone!

Just shows how important gut flora is for everyone! Indeed it is, even humans will get horribly ill if for example antibiotics kill their gut flora and supplement pro-biotics aren't taken. Been there before, ergh... Wouldn't wish it on anyone.
