I have some sad news. The small snail i have found in my tank some months ago died yesterday. He was grown a lot, was doing fine it seems. He was still not as advanced as his brothers and sisters. His shell was smaller and he didn't grow a lip yet. The others did. Last night when i came home, i found him very deep inside his shell. I tried to wake him up with some water but i knew it was to late. His little foot was out, not really normal for a snail. And he was infested with springtails probably trying to eat him. I have no idea what could have happened or what went wrong. 2 days ago he was sliding around, eating. I wish i knew what went wrong or that i could have helped him. He was still so young. I keep thinking that maybe he wasn't as strong as the others because of his start in life. He did't got a lot of different food since he was living in the moss. I'm a bit sad because i watched this one grow up closely. It's different than the tank with a lot of baby's. I wish i had looked at him a bit more in his last few days of his life. I don't even have a recent picture I don't really know what to do with him now. I placed him out of the big tank in a small one (still hoping that maybe he does have some life in him. Maybe the hypoaspis came to late, i don't know. I haven't seen that many slugmites that this could have caused it.

I am so sorry to hear this darling, you sound so distraught as I would be. Sometimes these things just happen suddenly and for no reason. It happens with others pets too. Healthy bunnies one day and next day dead and it is a mystery. I am sending lots of virtual hugs in the hope that they may help a little. When something like this happens to me I really lavish extra affection on those remaining, it really does help. You know where we are if you want to keep talking, that often helps too.
Lots of love Jo xxx

I gave the others some fresh food, fresh sepia and the hypoasmis are in and hunting. I've seen them this morning. Somehow i think that the others know that one is gone? They were all vast asleep and they all woke up last night except one that is sleeping in the moss. I did a check on all of them to be sure that no other snail has died silently in some corner. The baby tank is also doing well, they are on the other side of the room because i'm afraid that these slugmites could or would travel from one to an other tank. i'm looking for an other glass tank for the baby's because they are waaaaay better to maintain. Maybe i'll keep one of his siblings that i still have left. I still don't know what to do with his shell. The springtails are eating on him so i decided to let them clean it up. I don't want to throw him out like garbage either. His shell is so easy to break as well that i can't even clean it now. No idea... If i think back, i think his shell did look different a month ago, but i think it changed so slowly that i didn't really notice. But then again, i'm not sure about that. He has slept a while between the leafs in the tank like all the others so i haven't seen them that much. I hope he went silently and didn't suffer.

I'm so sorry to hear it, eibhlin I think snails do know when one is gone. I try to let the others see the empty shells so they can have closure, because sometimes snails go endlessly looking for the disappeared one. Sometimes they get really sad looking when they see the empty shell One guy put his head deep into the now empty shell and just sorta confirmed that there was nobody there. He seemed ok afterwards. I've had snails get shell deformities before they suddenly go, too. I wish we knew more about snails' health problems.

I left it there for 2 days but then i took it out. I thought that maybe it would start to smell or something. Should i put him back in? I don't know if he bonded with anyone in that short time of his life. I keep thinking about all the cute moments when he was smaller. When he was riding on his parent shell, or eating with the others that were waaay bigger. Somehow it feels like i somehow failed him.

I dunno, 2 days sounds like long enough for everyone to know about it.
Virtual hugs.

Thank you for these adorable photos hunni, they are so pretty, I love their little shells. The one of the snailies having a kiss is just the best, thank you for sharing these with us. You haven't failed in any ways sweetie, you are an excellent snaily mum. Thanks for the continuing updates.

Me too Mack love. I am buggy crazy and would love to go somewhere and have a bug hunt, preferably somewhere on the equator where they are huge. I do envy people who have all of these lovely little creatures in their gardens, the UK is too cold for things like Titan Beetles and lots of lovely snailies.

Yes we are lucky love. We can have pet African Pygmy hedgehogs here too whereas I believe that some states in the US ban them as pets.
