I have been giving my four Amber snails crushed egg shells mixed in with carrot mush after I noticed one had nibbles on the edge of ones shell. Someone just told me that is dangerous and could kill them because it is like force feeding. Is this true? I'm trying to keep my snails happy and healthy so your opinions would be highly appreciated.

Calcium is indeed best offered separately. Snails are perfectly capable of knowing how much they need, but they can't control their intake if it's all in their food. In the long run it causes problems. Egg shell works as an emergency better-than-nothing calcium source, but a permanent calcium source placed in the tank away from food is the best choice. A piece of cuttlefish bone, or maybe some limestone flour (sold for horses) on a little dish will do the job.

I always make sure their calcium powder is entirely separate from the food Mack love so they can choose if they want any or not. They love their cuttlefish bone too, it doesn't last five minutes in my snaily home. Greedy greedy snailies LOL!

Yeah they seem to know what they need because even when I did mix the egg shell in with their food they would eat a little. Just yesterday when I put just carrot they filled right up. So separate from now on. Amber snails have such thin weak shells I was hoping to make them stronger.

Thanks for the updates and for keeping us informed Mack love. I am sure they will grow into really strong little snailies with all the TLC you are giving them.
