Hi Folks, To all you guys who use woodlice in your tanks....do you ever have a problem with them escaping out of the tank? Sounds like a daft question but before i get any my other half wants to know if we'll end up with woodlice running round the house!!

Woodlice arent able to climb smooth surfaces, and probably wouldnt want to escape from an area that is very damp, with plenty of foods available. I havent had any problems with them escaping.

Why did you go for the tropical ones instead of the European Spook?
And Tigs, would you say the Springtails do a better job than the woodlice? I have to pick one until I can eventually afford the other.

well if you just want to buy some woodlice but also would like some springtails I have loads of the tropical white ones that I can send to you. They breed like mad! I was worried that they may irritate the snails but they don't seem to.

Spook: Ahh, I thought I'd get some tropical woodlice originally, since I have a warm tank, but not all my tanks are heated, and the european ones might be easier to breed separately as well, even though I don't have any more heat mats available. Decisions, decisions! well if you just want to buy some woodlice but also would like some springtails I have loads of the tropical white ones that I can send to you. They breed like mad! I was worried that they may irritate the snails but they don't seem to. I thought there was only one kind of springtail (tropical white ones)? I suspect if the snails are still as active as usual, they're fine. They hide in their shells if annoyed after all How much would you like for some Springtails? What's your paypal address?

This isn't really relevant but I just thought I'd mention it here as it's not worth it's own thread but it's to do with woodlice. If you want to create a luxury woodlice house one of these cat bowls is perfect - It's got a gap inside and a couple of doorways. I think they like it because it's totally dark. humid and they can cluster together away from the snails. As a bonus if you put your snail food in the bowls any bits that get knocked off land right outside their door. Just mist inside the 'doorways' now and again to keep it nice and damp for them and they'll colonise it in no time.
