Jeez that's a whole heap o' snails They look sorta like drill bits to me, or perhaps an old 'Journey to the centre of the Earth' drilling machine.

I can only image sound of munching what they make. In one summer night I was walking in nature and it was so silent I could hear them munhing it was little bit scary.

Hi All i have had these for about 4 months now i got them as babies off ebay and i have had quite alot of babies now i was running out of space so had to down size them but i am building them back up again now i have found them one of the easiest snails to look after, I keep mine in the small reptile tanks with 3 quaters of the lid covered in clingfilm and find they quite happy in there, mine like lettuce and cucumber when it has turned into a lump of mush Looking forward to receiving my new bloodlines. Thanks amber. x

Just found out that we're all spelling this species slightly wrong!..... It's actually Subulina Octona...... and not o c t a n a.. cos if you google the correct spelling then you get far more info!

I forgot about this, until Kevin mentioned it today. I've now changed all the o ctanas to octona (I have to type a gap now for oct ana somewhere in the word because I've made it a censored word. Hope no-one minds, it's just now we can all get used to the correct species name)

I am now going to conduct an experiment, I was doing so anyway but in a rather casual way. Time to do a proper study.
Basically I really believe that these little snails don't need to mate. I raised one on it's own from an egg (but forgot to write down dates etc). It grew and developed eggs inside it, which it laid. But I'm scrubbing the study in favour of a growth-rate/self-fertilisation study of one raised on it's own, to get a better idea of it's life cycle. This will include twice-weekly photographs and measurements.
It's not really easy for most of us to study the life cycle of our octona as most of us have so many of them we can't pick out individual ones within the tank!

Thanks, I'll try to get some better ones soon, some that aren't blurred. It's hard to tell a snail to keep still though, I never thought I'd see the day when I struggled to keep up with one ;D ;D

Mine are in a square container, 12x16 cm highxwide, between 24 and 30oC. I keep the lid off, but mine don't tend to climb out much. I give them chye sim, chye sim flowers, clovers and lettuce. they seem to like the chye sim the most, however, as well as the flowers.
The habitat has some moss and soil as well as a few rocks. they like to dig holes in the soil, so i piled some extra soil in a corner, although apart from that, the soil is quite even. The habitat is quite damp; I tend to take them out, pour in lots of water, then drain away the excess. I have 12 eggs now. Hope this helps!
oh yea, and I also grind some egg shells and mix it in with their food, I think it helps their shells, but I'm not too sure.

egg shell is a good calcium source and would help there shells some of us use cuttle fish or limestone flour aswell. I amazed they dont climb out, if i left the lid off one of my tanks my guys would be off!
