In the caracolus and pleurodonte tank, I recently noticed lots of tiny tiny black bugs hanging around the food dish, calcium and also on some of the snails. They are about the size of mites and springtails, some are a little bigger than others. The snails don't seem to be bothered by them, but I didn't know what they were, so to be safe I cleaned out the tank, replaced all substrate, washed the decorations, and then bathed the snails. However, today I've spotted them in the fulica tank as well. I'm going to give it a good clean tomorrow, but does anyone know what they are? I know mites are white so they can't be that. They seem mainly to hang around the snails' food, but I've also seen them on the snails' shells too. The fulica are all still active and eating and don't seem bothered by them. I don't know how they can have appeared in either tank, because I use dried coir and dried sphagnum moss in my tanks and I microwave it before I rehydrate it, wash all food well before I put it in, etc.

Hmmm things appear out of nowhere though, even if you`ve cleaned the substrate. Do they move like the springtails move? Because there`s our native species that appeared in my tanks, they`re slightly bigger than the tropical ones and dark coloured, they jump too. Can you see legs? Are they spiderlike? or mitelike? I have a big old variety of crawley things appear in my tanks, all with no problems really........

Yeah just like Feebix sayd they appear out on nowhere at times.... so it seems anyhow. If they're thin and jump, and just look like the springtails only dark, then that's what they are, native springtails. Totally harmless. I have some in my tanks too.
