I got 8 re-homers quite recently, and just been id'd as fulica's There are all active bar the smallest, which is approx 1.5 inch big, and it has retracte into it's shell I noticed it this morning and is still hiding away - so unsure as to why this is? it's quaters i assume are fine, temps 25ish, damp substrate etc etc, all the other 7 are munching and climbing well, which gives me the indicator their home is ok when they are younger/smaller do they tend to hide/sleep more than say largers/older ones? Not seen any bugs etc in there, and there is plenty of food so it has the opportunty to munch like the others - do i need to take it out and put in it's own enclosure? cheers

How retracted is it? If it's all tucked inside but you can't see any of the inside of the shell, then there's nothing to worry about. If it's retracting farther back into the shell, it usually means they're not feeling too great - which if they're rescues is probably nothing you've done or not done You can try encouraging it out with a warm bath - see how quickly it responds.

For a bath under a tap, you can run it over the body too - it'll respond better than just water on the shell. You might be better off in this case by leaving the snail in a shallow dish of warm water, probably no more than 1cm deep for a snail that small. Add a little more hot water when it starts to get cold. That'll give it plenty of time to think about coming out into the warm Land snails are almost always totally retracted if they've passed - and, well, they very quickly start to wiff a bit. If it starts to smell, then there's no longer any doubt

Maybe snail is just sleeping. I remember year ago my babies use to sleep always hidden in peat or at least retract till they wake. Hope they will be ok. I think and have noticed when they get bigger snails will sleep more on peat and not hide so much. Sometimes it's real problem that I have to wait them to wake up so I can at least open tank if they sleep 50/50 on wall and on lid then it's impossible get open.

i gave it a gentle warm bath, and for a second or 2 it thought about coming out, but just like turning a light switch off it just stopped moving .....i can't be 100% but i 'think' it might have passed away literally in my fingers .......i am hoping it is not the case, so have put it in a small pet pals tank onit's own and will see in the morning....... an observation though when i had it out, is that there was slight shell damage around the end of the shell where the body comes out, and was sharpish, so wondeing if it was uncomfortable for the snal to come out and move around? Not sure really ? cheers it is well retracted, you really have to look to see the body of the snail and i can see plenty of the inside of the shell daft question i know but when i give a warm 10secs bath do just run tap over its shell, not sure if the warmth will get through the shell to warm it up) or run it into the shell, dont want to harm/drown the poor lil blighter...... Easiest to see if snails is dead is to gentle touch leg and see if is moves slightly. If it's just slimy hanging loose thing it could be dead and even hatchlings start to smell quite soon. If leg has some "hardeness" like live snail always has it's not dead.

I've had snail that start to come out of their shells and then change their minds and just stop mid-way through.
How is your snail now? Has he come out yet?

no not come out, just checked now ...but it has retracted back into its shell, rather than just lying there, so if it had passed away would this actually be possible (to retract back in), or would it still by layed there in the same position? Sometimes when they pass away they can shrink a little as they lose moisture, but it's probably more likely that your snail just isn't in the mood to come out. Perhaps best to just place him in a warm area of the tank with a tasty bit of food next to him. If he does die, as others say, he will soon smell of dead fish. It can be quite strong. Sometimes the flesh hardens and darkens. Sometimes there will be brown liquid coming out of the shell if you tip it up, which I wouldn't recommend (yuck). Basically if he dies you will soon know it.
I hope he's ok though. Fingers crossed for the little guy.
