Sadly found tigers for sale in Brixton market today There weren't many left, several were dead already. They had larger ones and some smaller ones - some were juveniles and sub-adults I picked out 4 larger ones which were definitely alive. A couple of them were out of their shells looking around, which is always a good sign. Brought them home... yup, they really do put them in plastic carrier bags! In the bathtub. Very muddy and dirty still, but the warm water is persuading them out. Shells starting to look better after a bit of a wash... look how skinny the snails are though!! All starting to look cleaner and happier after a good scrub with a soft toothbrush and plenty of warm water: This is MUCH more like it... safely in a warm, clean tank, enjoying a variety of fresh food! They are absolutely gorgeous snails, and so far they seem to be doing OK. One of them seems to be incredibly feisty and resilient - we can only hope that they all have the will to cling on to life and health! I was very, very sad to see them on sale at Brixton, but I can only hope that at least these 4 will survive and go on to become happy and healthy.

You are great Polly, Those poor snails, I cant beleive they have to go through that then to be sold and sent away in plastic bags, I had tears looking at them as they are one of my favorite species. I so wish i was closer. Good luck with them, They are in the best possible hands if the margies are anything to go by. Please keep us informed. x

The snails seem to be doing well I'm not sure if all of them have eaten yet but they've all been up and about and active overnight. One of them stuffed his face for absolutely ages yesterday! Poor baby must have been starving. He just sat in the food bowl and munched and munched and munched for hours! They're all out of their shells sitting around today. I've given them a good spray, and switched on a small heatmat to get their tank warmed up slowly without any big sudden temperature changes. I'm sure they'll be happier to have it a little warmer. Planning to give them all another warm bath soon and take more pics

Have had a reply back from the email I sent to my MP about the Brixton snail trade - it was passed on to a local councillor by my MP "Kate passed your enquiry on to me as I represent Coldharbour ward in which the covered markets are situated. I read your email with great interest and I have to say some surprise. Your expertise and the case you make are really fascinating. I haven’t seen these snails for some time and had assumed that their import and sale had become illegal – I didn’t realise that they were a seasonal food thing. I feel that the points you have made are very fair, and will make a case for trying to make changes on the basis you suggest. I’m not sure if I’ll be successful but I will do my best. It usually takes c 2 weeks for a response to a Members Enquiry so I should be able to get back to you then. In the meantime I have also mentioned the matter to the cabinet member for environment under whose portfolio the matter falls." Yay! Sounds hopeful At least they seem to have taken me seriously!
