Hi, I have today received my lovely Iredalei snaily from Welsh. She has told me it mated about 3 weeks ago but no babies as yet. Can anyone tell me the correct conditions I should be keeping him in. Caroline seems to think he'll keep the sperm till conditions are right but I don't know if they are right.
This is probably a daft question but is there any way of telling if it is carrying babies.
Any help or advice much appreciated.
Cheers ;D Jo

Not sure what the 'correct' conditions are as such...but my little Iredalei lives with my tigers,so he's kept very warm and humid...temp prob up near the 30 degree mark. He seems quite happy with himself living like this and always active and eating well! Not sure how you can tell if they're carrying young or not, mine is only a baby at the moment so I've no experience with adult Iredalei....

it will most likley be incubating the eggs within itself i think

Have you any idea how long they incubate eggs for? I've only had Fulica's and Hamillei that have laid and it was not lond after mating but I presume incubation takes quite a bit longer.

Mine took two or three months to lay, so don't worry as long as it's active and eating well.

Wow didn't realise they took that long. He's eating well and slimes around the tank most of the time. I have him on moss in with my baby hamillei, suturalis and ovum.
Thanks Jo

just a point to mention iredalei have live young not eggs Yes but it's believed that they incubate the eggs within themselves and release the live young once the eggs have hatched Plus it's 2 years and 5 months too late. This thread started April 2008

ohhhhhh yeah never mind, im always one for commenting WAYYYYYYY too late lol. sounds like iredalei can be kept with other species, i have ireds but they're tiny so are separate, as i knew they were ok to put with other species but sum1 on another forum told me they get stressed out in communal tanks and die, but i ignored them anyway and will be putting my ireds with the other when they're bigger, feeding them up on sweet potato lol

Well i've heard several people report that they don't do well for extended periods of time in communal tanks. I'm not sure....
