Hi, I 've been trawling for information and came across your site. My daughter's GAL, Percival Indiana ;D appears to have given birth to around 30-40 live snails. He is a lone snail now, but she bought him and one other at around 3months old-around (the size of a thumb nails). She kept them together for just one more month then gave one away to a friend before it was sexually mature. So,since March last year Percy has been a singleton. Last week though, my daughter was away and I was worried about Percy. In fact I thought he was dead for a while, then after reading up realised he had sealed himself into his shell. Like any mother I checked on him every few hours so am absolutely sure there were no eggs in the tank. 2 days later the tank is invaded by all these baby snails. Did Percy get "bored" and self fertilise do you think? I am not sure what species he is.Maybe someone can help identify him from the pics I've attached please? Attachments:

He looks like an Achatina fulica from the picture.
They don't give birth to live babies, they only lay eggs. When you say you checked on the snail every few hours, does that include night time? Did you sift through the soil regularly? Snails often prefer to bury their eggs to keep them safe, so it's most likely that the snail laid eggs in the soil which then hatched before you knew the eggs were there. They can be very easy to miss.
