My poor Taavetti had a miscarriage last night. He pushed out a couple big white eggs that were soft as they had no shell, making distressed faces, and squirming. Afterwards he was eating a LOT, very fast. I picked him up to observe him more closely, and he wouldn't eat on my hand or on a dish until I got another snail from the tank to sit next to him. When I did, he patted the other snail all over with his eye stalks and feelers, and then started eating, touching the other snail all the time. No more bad eggs came out during the next couple hours. This morning I woke up to Taavetti hiding under the plastic fern, and the soft eggs disappeared; I think someone had them for a protein snack. Nobody but my fulica are sexually mature so this can't be due to cross-breeding problems, he's well fed, and he's pushed out good test eggs before, so I don't know what went wrong. Poor fellow.

I had 2 of the Bulldozers do this , they've since laid normal hard eggs which have hatched, my thoughts are that these soft eggs are kinda like test eggs and spite them laying one or 2 normal hard test eggs these soft ones are just the body's way of sorting things out.
I've not found any more since and those 2 snails are fine n healthy.
All being well this is whats happening with Taavetti.

Thanks for responding Zorst. I hope Taavetti feels okay now. It seemed like an unpleasant experience for him and his neck/birth canal area was sort of swollen for a long time afterwards.

Poor guy it must have been a bit of a shock and he must have felt a bit sore. I know from working with horses etc sometimes the first few times dont always go so well but usually its just the body trying things out n learning how. If he's otherwise healthy, active and eating I would say its most likely just that.

Thanks, friends. He had a good rest in the fake fern, and I saw him snailing around chewing on stuff this morning, so I think he's okay. I hope he won't have to go through that again.

That's good to hear! Has he laid eggs before or were those his first?

That's good to hear! Has he laid eggs before or were those his first? He's laid well-shaped, hard-shelled test eggs before, so this was surprising. As far as I know he hasn't laid a proper clutch yet.

Hmmmm... This is an interesting, but sad story. Glad to hear that he's moving around like normal again.

Yeah, I think he's fine now, and I haven't seen more bad eggs from him since I started the thread.
