The big new hide has holes in the sides, and looking in through one today, I figured out where one of my scallop shells (which have various uses in my tanks) had gone. They'd dragged it in there!

At a parking lot today. A wild Arianta arbustorum and two tiny hatchlings (one pictured) were eating a dead earthworm. I got sad thinking that someone could intentionally step on them, so I moved all three snails and their gourmet dinner to safety.

I will start again. Well done hunni, I remember doing things like that when I was able to bend down. I have rescued many a beetle from a walkway. I just wish more people were like us. What pretty snailies they are too.

I've helped beetles too, as well as the occasional exhausted bumblebee. I wish more people would.
I still wonder how the tiny baby snails got there, because they were pretty far from the grass (about 2 meters)! That's of course not so long for the adult, but it seems quite long for hatchlings. Maybe they hitched a ride on the big guy, or maybe they really did crawl there on their tiny feet.

I love beetles Etana love and am so glad to hear that you have rescued some. I go onto a page called Insect World and the little creatures who share this planet with us really beggar belief, they are amazing. "Their tiny feet" I love it hunni. Mind you I wouldn't have blamed them if they hitched a ride on a bigger snailey, I would LOL!

Let's see if this works at all. Sorry it's not a photo, it was too mesmerizing for me to go get a camera, so I drew this silly little comic a day after. The idea is that Mauno and a tiny new A. fulica hatchling were snailing on the tank front door. Mauno was going much faster and it looked as though the hatchling would get crushed by Mauno's huge heavy shell dragging against the glass (frame 1). Some of you might remember a time when Mauno was young and never let his shell drag, lol. He lets it happen now. Anyway - as illustrated in frame 2 - at the exact right moment, Mauno lifted up his shell and placed it on top of his tail, just avoiding crushing the hatchling. And to make this look even less random, he let his shell down again right after the hatchling had been passed by safely (frame 3). The interesting thing is that Mauno didn't look at the hatchling with his eyes at any point, so he knew by some other means that the tiny guy was there, to very surprising precision too as big snails often look so clumsy. And of course Mauno is A. balteata and the baby is A. fulica, but that doesn't stop Mauno from being careful. I love it.

Thank you for that wonderful drawing Etana love and for explaining it to us. It is amazing how they care for each other and as you say, they do not need to look to know what is needed. I too love how they will look after another sort of snaily too, it doesn't have to be one of their own. Their instincts are sharp when it comes to the babies and I think it is so cute. My babies were all out last night, hitching rides and having a meal, they are so cute.

Also no pic, but a similar story to what happened to you Jo with one of your snails a long time ago. I was leaving for the weekend, had just filled up the baths and food dishes when my lovely Iisakki climbed up the door and patted it with his eyes, looking like he wanted my attention. I went to him, opened the door, patted his shell and told him I'd of course return. As I did, I was wondering why he kept getting grumpier and grumpier, making an "ergh, ewwww" face and slowly retracting. Then I remembered I'd just brushed my teeth and used mouth wash! I was smelling foul to him! Poor dear!

Hahahahaha!!! That is brilliant Etana hunni. Poor little man, I can just imagine what it must have smelt like to him. Thanks so much for sharing and I know I shouldn't laugh. Please don't tell him LOL!

I gave Gaius a fresh carrot, he chose to rather have some poop. I get it, fresh carrots are less tasty lol.

Not pictured: An hour later or so, Gaius was seen happily retracted back into his shell to sleep. I didn't want to disturb him, so I didn't grab the camera. The carrot had been rasped, probably after he ran out of poop he could reach from that sitting position. He's growing quite lazy.

Also, Mauno was in some trouble with a fulica hatchling again. This time the baby was on his back, and Mauno was trying to climb to the food dish, which required him dragging his shell up, but he didn't dare to do it as long as the baby was there. I was in a hurry so I couldn't watch how it got resolved.
I only know that if it had been my late old Mommy Halonen, she'd have grabbed the baby with her lips and then gone about her business. Mauno doesn't do that kind of things as far as I can tell, he's just super gentle.
Someone else hasn't been as gentle with him, there's new scarring on his back in the spot where amorous fulica rasp the snail they're trying to woo. They've really been desperate! No wonder, Mauno IS absolutely lovely, but he shows almost no sexual interest in anyone, as far as I can tell. Poor Maija drops test eggs and sits still with her cheek bulging.

Oh bless him, we put these wonderful things in for them to eat and they would rather eat poop lol. That is sad about Mauno, the nice natured snaily is the one that people tend to be a bit rough with, he sounds an angel. Isn't it unusual that he isn't interested index with anyone, do you think that will change Etana love? Poor Maija, it sounds as if she is desperately looking for a partner. I would love to have seen Halonen go to that baby's rescue, I remember your saying she was a very special little girl.
