I've raised it from an egg and they've always had cuttlebone in abundance. Little confused as I've seen mature retic shells getting lighter but this one is just over a year old.

I am not sure love as I am fairly new to snailies myself but someone on here will be able to tell you.

Just over a year old? If it were an old snail, I'd easily say that it's just a fading layer that is typical for older snails, but in this case it could be the following:
a. the snail rasps itself too much b. substrate may be too acidic c. calcium deficiency or other nutrient deficiency d. tank mates might be doing the damage e. maybe it's just wearing sooner than it should for no particular reason
I don't know that snail too well or its history and care conditions, but these are just some possible causes for the outer layer of the shell might be wearing away.

From GTS's list I'd go for b. Mixing in a bit of limestone flour when adding new substrate should help with that, though the discoloration most likely won't be reversed.

Thanks everyone. The snail in question is still doing absolutely fine, his shell hasn't deteriorated further and he's been getting a bit special treatment (calcium baths, green tea, private dining) and that looks to have halted any further deteriation. His tank mates are all fine with no signs but I've been mixing in calcium powder into the substrate as a precaution.

Turns out that sometimes all they need is a little extra TLC.

That is true GTS hunny and isn't it nice giving them that TLC? I am sure they know.
