Hi all.
My tigers are growing quickly and seem to be going through their first aestivation/ deep sleep with myself (they are around 8 months old). I've experienced this with my degneri before, and just left them too it.
Has anyone had much experience with their tiger snails and aestivation? I'm reluctant to wake them up as I appreciate the natural process and benefits behind it, but was just curious of other people's first hand experience. Their tank reads on average 28 degrees celsius, with it getting cooler in the substrate, and 99% humidity (measured with a digital probe). The substrate can admitting get a little dry to the touch (I use a organic peat mix with sphagnum moss, worm castings, compost, and perilite mixed with calcium powder; the pH is around 7), though the probe always reads 99% humidity when submerged. I'm crossing my fingers that it's a natural occurrence, rather than a reaction to the conditions.
I've always used coir in my other tanks but this was a haven for pests when damp so have tried something else.
In GAL husbandry most of my experience comes with achatina reticulata and they have never went into aestivation or hibernation - but it's not as common in the species, naturally or in captivity.

My young Tiger snails went into aestivation last winter. Most of them came out of it ok, but a couple of the smallest ones died. Gaius the huge one didn't do it, if my memory serves me correctly. I suppose I wouldn't let them sleep through the whole winter this time. However my A. balteata snails will seal in a lot more than my Tigers do. It's never been problematic, just a bit boring because they spend so much time sealed in. But they grow well and eat & bathe lots in between being sealed in, so I suppose it's normal for them.

I haven't had any of mine sealing themselves in so far, I think they are afraid of someone else getting to the food bowl and eating it all lol. It is tricky sometimes Etana love isn't it? It is hard to know what to do for them and what they are feeling. If only they could talk.
