I have 8 milk snails at school. They have a small heating pad stuck to the side of their tank and come out to eat or move about at least once most days in the afternoons. When I pick one up, which is not too often, it feels cold. Do I need to get a bigger heating pad or otherwise fix their environment?

They do like to be warm love so maybe an additional heat pad on one of the sides of their tank would be beneficial. I always check too that the plug leading to their head pads has not been accidentally switched off. That happened with my hermies today and they only had one source of warmth. Mine have a huge one covering the back of their tank and they are next to a radiator which is always on and I am pleased to say that they appear to be happy little snailies. Please keep us updated.

Don't be concerned if they feel cold. They will not emit any heat. If they are active and eating often they, and the temperature, sounds absolutely fine.

If my memory serves me correct, I think that snails are "cold-blooded" or ecothermic in other words, so they'll never feel as warm as say cat or bird since they have no biological way of generating their own internal heat.

Oh good. Thanks for all the responses. They do seem pretty happy - they come out almost daily and wander around and interact with each other and my students. They are not happy enough to breed again, but... :}
