Eggs?

Is it possible for a snails eggs to be fertile even if they've never been exposed to another snail? Barney has layed a full clutch despite, as far as I'm aware, never having lived with another snail. I have heard about them laying individual 'test' eggs which he has done before but just a day after moving him into a new, more appropriate setup he goes and lays a whole load and is being far more active... obviously this is a good sign as it means I'm doing something right! But I didn't really want to terminate the eggs if there was a chance of them hatching as they would be my first babies! 😊 Any advice?

Well, it is allegedly possible for snails to self fertilize. Some snails do keep sperm for a very long time after the mating, for deciding later when they want to have the babies (lol I'd love for humans to be able to do that), but if you are sure he reached sexual maturity in your care, this could be very interesting! Keep us posted!

I am watching this space too love. We all know they are very remarkable little creatures so I wouldn't be surprised.

Ye he just layed another clutch today I'm gonna keep them and see... how long would it normally take them to hatch?

The time can be pretty much anything from immediate to some weeks, because snails can somewhat decide when to lay, lol.

It must be nice to have that choice. I bet there are many ladies who wished they could have given birth when it was most convenient lol! Do keep us posted love. Hugs Jo xx

Lol yes it seems the "lowly" snail has it all figured out so well. Some non-tropical species even use birth control if there's too many snails around!

Good lord Etana love, these lovely little things never cease to amaze me. I am tempted to make jokes about them taking the pill or using condoms but seriously, how do they do it?

The Helix Pomatia will secrete a different kind of slime that renders their partner temporarily infertile. Genius! Some other snails seem to keep track of how many egg clutches are in an area, and will not lay if they can't do it far enough from other eggs.

Not to sound negative or anything, but if your snail has never been exposed to another snail throughout its entire life, chances are that the eggs will very likely be infertile, test eggs. I'm aware of possible self-fertilization, but this too, has been an area of debate for quite some time. For now continue to watch them. They should hatch within 7-28 days depending on the species and temperature.

Thanks Ye I have been going on the assumption that they're not fertile... but how interesting would it be if they did hatch! Proof of self fertilisation?

Well I'm pretty sure all the eggs are infertile! However, I'm not sure whether the quantity of eggs Barney is laying is abnormal as it does seem a bit excessive, like daily clutches of easily around 50eggs excessive! I mean it doesn't seem to be an issue for him but I wondered if that was an abnormally large amount and if so what might be causing it? I was thinking maybe an excess of calcium as he can demolish a cuttlefish! Or possibly a loneliness thing as he is living by himself... well until yesterday anyway!

Haha wow that's a LOT of eggs! You'll see very soon if it's because he's so lovesick! Keep the cuttlebone in there, he knows perfectly well how to regulate his calcium intake.
