Hi all I have a mystery snail! I brought him off a gumtree guy, who could tell me absolutely nothing about it, apparently it was his daughters who left it when she went to uni? He's a very sweet little guy, wouldn't day the best set up, and i don't think he knows other snailies, but a sweetie none the less flic.kr/p/SZgXUCHe's only about 4cm, he has a bit of new growth now but not sure if that's adding as an extra or just normal growing? X

Ooo pretty shell! The face looks like fulica to me, but can you tell us how his columella is coloured?

I thought the face was fulica-esque too Etena, it's the shell stripes that confuse me! I haven't looked at the colour yet, but I'll give them a go when I get home x

His mantle is covering his columella in the pic, we're looking for the colour of the shell underneath. With fulica, it's white. Many others have a very distinct colour like pink, orange etc. You can try to catch the colour when he's fully retracted, or very very gently push his mantle away with a water colour brush or something like that. It's not attached to the shell at that point of the snail, but it's sensitive. For help: www.petsnails.co.uk/images/identification/columella_difference.jpg

I managed to see a little bit, it looks white? It's the consistent strip pattern, is that a type of fulica? Sorry for all the questions lol x

He doesn't appreciate having his mantle touched, but it's for good purpose and you won't be doing it often, so hopefully he'll forgive you. Fulica shells can grow very stripy. The face, skin and columella are better indicators. So with all those it sounds like you have a particularly pretty fulica!

Oh bless him. When you touch them in certain places they think we are being too personal LOL!! I am glad you have been able to determine the colour of the inside of his shell though. Everything crossed for the babies love.

Lol Jo absolutely I just got a reply form the seller (finally!) Who's saying he's a fully grown Cravani snail, which seems odd primarily because he's grown a good inch of shell which isn't stripy, though still beautiful lol. I don't want to say the sellers wrong, but it just seems weird he's now growing, I have no idea about the Cravani aspect though! X

I have never heard of Cravani snails either love, have you googled them? You may get an idea of what they do look like and if indeed that is what the little one is. Please let us know. Hugs Jo xx
