Okay, good pics, thanks. It looks like a piece of his radula (rasping tongue) is hanging out and getting in the way of him using his mouth normally.
I heard of a snail who had this happen, he was able to use liquid food after the radula broke off completely, but couldn't be released back to the wild ever again.

I wonder if there's a specialist you could email or call. I guess that the hanging part needs to be cut off, but I don't have any idea what is the best way to do it.
If you hold the snail with his mouth up, what happens if you drop a bit of the soft mushy food on his face? Could gravity help him swallow? After all he can't choke on food because snails don't breathe through the mouth, and time is getting short for him, he needs nourishment.

Also the syringe feeding might be a good idea this time. Normally you can't force feed a snail but since this fellow has been attempting to eat, it might be different.

Black poop usually means he's eaten soil or rotten leaf matter. If it's that, it's normal and healthy, and it seems he might be figuring out a way to use his mouth. Are you having any luck feeding him the soft mushy foods?
