for as long as I've been keeping snails I've just been using garden compost, but just recently we've gotten some new stuff and it's not really suitable, it doesn't hold moisture well so it's either too dry or too wet.
I was just wondering what sort of stuff you lot use, and what's appropriate and what's not, I could do with an ecconimic alternative, which I can get locally. what sort of stuff can you use?

Well I'm really boring and have always used stuff like multi purpose compost, or whatever is on offer at the garden centre at the time!! Never had a problem with any of it and the snails have never complained! Oooo yeh i use sphagnum moss in my tanks as well....a couple of heaps in each corner....really good for keeping them humid!

I use Coir.
I used compost before, bought it from morrisons.....had little white bugs in them, turned into those horrid black flies.
One lot of compost I got though had nothing in it, used it for a few months and it was great...then started getting those flies a few months down the line so i switched.

Yup, coir blocks for mine too. I may have another go with the moss, mine weren't interested before.

Hi I,m thinking of switching substrate. The organic compost I've been getting recently I've not been happt with. Although the snailies love it I find that because it has sall bits of bark and stuff in it some of them are going mouldy and don't want it affecting the snilies. One bad I got I used for a week and then found black flies into so had to change it. I have tried my snailies with coir but unless i get it off ebay I find it hard to get hold of. Also my snailies didn't burrow in it they slimed their way all around the sides and lids on their tanks. What does everyone think about just using moss? How olong does moss last for? I can get nearly a dustbin bag size from a local garden centre for £8 so getting it in summer is not a problem. It's easier to clean coz you can was it well in a bucket. I had thought about trying half and half to see if the snailies have a preference and to make sure they burrow in it. Don't want tem to stop coz my little slimers love to burrow. I have read a few threads re this subject and there are a few different options but not really sure what to do. Any thoughts? cheers ;D

I'm a big fan of moss but I've never used it just on it's own....i know some people do and think it works ok!...best thing to do is try it and see if your snailies approve!! ;D

I know cant' believe it. I think we are the only 2 snaily people in West Yoskhire though but we can cope. Us Yorkshire girlies are a tough breed.
