Hi everyone, I'm sad to say that I believe Pumpkin, my littlest tiger, is passing away.
I found her this morning retracted about an inch, I gave her a warm bath, but she only just came out, never extending her stalks. I put her back in her tank, on the food and left her alone. When I came home tonight I found her in the same place, with Raspberry sat next to her.
She has a green tinge already, and though she is just about responsive, I've decided that attempting to wake her again would be more cruel than kind, as she is now retracted all the was to her whorls.
She is resting, hopefully peacefully, in her favourite spot, with Raspberry and Pear beside her, hopefully they'll provide her with some comfort.

Sorry to hear it picklepies. I find it so beautiful that they will sit beside a dying friend, I've seen my snails do the same. They also give last kisses, if possible. Hope you and Pumpkin's friends are ok.

Thank you Etena, I always feel a little better seeing them say goodbye. I checked on them this morning and Pumpkin has gone, with pear and raspberry beside her. Unfortunately it looks like pear is developing the same problem, not as retracted yet so he might still make it. I've done a complete clean out just incase, Raspberry still looks good so I'm not sure what it could be xx

Pear could also be in mourning. Move around the stuff in the snail tank and watch that he eats and drinks.

I am so sorry to hear this Picklepies love, it is heartbreaking when they leave us. I really hope we all meet up again someday, the thought of not meeting up with my pets when I pass doesn't bear thinking about. I hope Pear is going to be alright, perhaps she is grieving and showing the same symptoms. I hope you are OK hunni. Everything crossed here.
Hugs Jo xx

I hope the same Jo, I'm sure we'll all meet up again Pear is definitely off, his out his shell, with his eyes in, but his reproductive area looks swollen? flic.kr/p/TCMD75The humidities quite high in the tank today so he shouldn't dry out, I'm also misting him every hour to make sure, but he does have a bath? Oh, no.. that looks bad. Did you see him mate earlier, possibly with Pumpkin? Sometimes egg production goes really wrong as snails are coded to give it so much, from filling so much of their entire shell cavity with eggs to getting very exhausted from laying. I had one of my snails push out what looked like a broken egg, then four good ones, and then die - possibly with more broken egg material in him.
(At least the four babies all grew up to be wonderful, big and strong snails.)

He's been getting better and worse throughout the day, not really declining, but not really getting better :/ as far as I'm aware Pumpkin hadn't quite reached sexual maturity, but it's possible he mated with Raspberry? I haven't seen any eggs through his breathing hole, but I more than one they developed (?) Before I saw them. I've just checked him, he seems better when out, hit eyes are out and he's not as retracted, but he was the same before I cleaned out the tank? I'm so sorry to hear about your snail Etena, glad the babies grew well xx

Sorry to keep adding sad updates guys, but Pear past away last night, and Raspberry is showing the begining stages. This is horrible, I've tried everything I know to try and help them, but within a day of each other they're becoming sick and dying 24 hours later xx

How very unfortunate. If they weren't mature just yet, it's possible that you happened to have a genetically weak set of tiger babies. Snails seem to have a built in "killswitch" that triggers death in weak individuals right before they can reproduce. It's partially speculation but so often we get sudden death in snails on the verge of puberty. In the nature that's a good way to keep the genes from declining too much but with pets it's obviously painful. I have had this happen with Tigers too, the first time was the worst because the poor guy was a rescue to begin with and he'd just gotten better from the original problems.

I'm sorry to hear about your tiger baby Etena, that must've been particularly painful I am thinking it may have been linked to maturity, there was no other change in environment, the temp and food was consistent, so I'm assuming it was a kill switch type thing xx

I know it is nature and all that but I think it is so cruel at times. If a guinea pig, for instance, has a litter and one is a runt, the mother will just let it die slowly in the corner - dreadful!

Man. I had this happen just now, too, with two promising tigers. Mauno watched over them as they passed away and now he won't eat, again.
