Ohh I'm really glad to see that there's a chance for Anakin to burrow now! Lol erm, this is the aquarium decoration piece I have, as shown on the website of the very store where I bought it. I'm not sure this is helpful for you as they don't even say the brand name but my snails love it (I have it in the tank on its side), and I can cover it up with softer things such as moss so it's 100% safe to fall on. www.uusiakvaario.fi/tuote/puunrunko

I could do with some shelving in my snaily tank but to be honest, I don't know how to go about it and hubby is useless at anything like that.

So yesterday I walked past my local florist shop to notice they had a lovely shop window full of logs that they use as part of their flower displays. I asked the girl where she got them from and explained my cause. She immediately said would you like some and with my eyes dialating, I said yes! These have been sitting in her back shop for about 3 months however I did give them a good scrub with a sanding block and sterilised and washed many times. Now im just starting to be happy with my setup, looking at ideas of a trickle system of such running down the back wall into a filtered water feature, early days though. I hope you like it 👍

Cheers 👍
I made a mistake a few days ago.
I became a member of Ali*** Fost** Facebook page. (edited as I feel its to harsh naming and shaming)
Wrong move man as much as most of the members are lovely all I think she knows about is breeding.
Some of the practices in the group was so outdated its unbelievable.
Please no 1 join this group stay here where the real scientific information is.
I know my setup is big but in the wild how many snails with regards to GALS die each year by climbing to high, even a rough % would do, is it a lot or what?
I would also like to know how deep do they burrow in the wild?
Ive been fortunate enough as a youngster to dwell their lands but not actually record how deep they burrow at night?

Well it's not the height they go up to, or even the fall that is dangerous. The danger is in falling on a rock so that they get shell breakage in the wrong place, such as over a crucial inner organ. Falling on soft things is no big deal at all, other than leaving the snail confused and annoyed.
Burrowing, well I have personally seen big snails go completely under the soil, really as deep as my tank allows. I have maybe 15cm (4 inches) in the thickest places. I don't know how deep they dig in the wild.

Yeah totally, thats why I did take the rocks out when the guys n GALS here recommended that I do so.
I have heard of people saying that snails let go on the roof of their enclosure but as far as I am aware 🐌 would only do that if its low enough. I think snails are intelligent enough to sence dangerous heights.
In my view the bigger your setup the better. Not only is it easier to get the environment closer to its natural environment (humidity etc). I feel even my setup is a small prison compared to what they would have in the wild.
@ anyone else Has it ever been recorded how deep they burrow in the wild and how high they will climb?
Do you know they gave me a hard time for having my deepest part of substrate at 6 inches. Horrible people and she clearly only cares about sales.

I wish mine were bigger too MOA love, especially as the hatchlings are growing really quickly. I will have to get them a bigger home at some point.

You get the biggest that you can afford Jo thats the way I always do it. As far as I am aware any Zoologist, Vet would recommend the same as thats the rule for all animals and in my view the same goes for snails.
Im sure you have shown me pictures of your setup Jo and it looks great 👍
I know of course that the 3 species I have are housed together and I know you cant do that with every species as some live in cooler environments etc but I explained that I studied the weather in both Ghana and Zanzibar for a month and the weather and temp etc was usually around the same... They didnt like this eather. I was going to go on and explain that the rectics as far as I am aware dont like breeding around other species so the A achatina is safe lol and the zanzibarcia well it doesnt lay eggs so I doubt if it would either unless of course self fertilisation. But I dont think they had the intelligence to consider other peoples views.
These people have to realise that best practices change. It wasnt so long ago it was perfectly legal to buy fish without a filter, now in the UK it breaks the animal welfare act and so it should.

I don't think I have hunni but I might be wrong. My head is all over the place lately. The tank I have at the moment is the biggest I can afford but there is no doubt I will have to upgrade sometime in the future. All snailies are happy though, eating and wandering about.
Rules for animal welfare have improved drastically over the past few years I am pleased t say I just wish the same could be said for elsewhere. The punishments are still not sufficient when someone has been guilty of animal cruelty.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well. Quick update and some pictures. The snails are doing really well and growing so quickly. I have now started intrducing very well washed and sterilised wild foods that I usually pick for my tortoise, dandelion etc. I do still feed some produce foods but with them having such a diverse natural diet I thought the wild stuff would provide excellent nutrition. To give you an idea of their size they are eating from a dog bowl. Have a lovely weekend. MOA. P.S see if you can spot the Achatina zanzibarcia
