I'm going to release some springtails in the big tank. This will feed the remaining hypoaspis mites so they will be there for a while. My small tanks all have springtails but my big one doesn't. I thought some would move in there on their own but so far none spotted... I'll help them a hand haha. If i remove the food dishes from my baby snail tanks there are always quite a few on it so i think i will just move the dish in the big tank to release them there.

Of course you cannot get rid of your snailies because they are not well love, I quite agree with you and I really hope that the hunters get to work and get rid of the bloody things!!! Good luck and please keep us updated, I want to hear of completely mite free tanks.
Yes keeping animals is always a problem love when it comes to pesty things. The blood mites chickens get are awful and the poor little things even get them in the scales on their legs. luckily there are some really good treatments out there though. Can you pick up your chickens and cuddle them?
Thanks Etana love, I should have realised.

She has been battling blood lice with them for a while now. I gave her some of the hypoaspis but it seems there are still some of the bad mites around there. They seem pretty strong and persistent. I hope that the springtails will feed the left hypoaspis so they can continue to eat away the slugmites as well and maybe get some offspring. I have seen quite some walking around in there so i'm 100% sure that there is still a good number of hypoaspis thriving in my tank. They usually hide in the dark and come out at night the most. Sometimes i see one wandering around in broad daylight The snail that i saw the slugmites on again has been sleeping in the shelter place of the hypoaspis since yesterday so thats good!

If you go onto the British Hen Welfare Trust site they recommend some really great sprays that you can use. I know your mum will be using sprays obviously but a couple of these are quite new and seem t do the trick, according to other chickie mums.
I hope you get rid of the wretched things soon love, it sounds as if things are going in the right direction though. Thanks for the update.

I think they will be fine. The springtails i released in there are going around and they also reproduce quite well... This morning i saw some of the hypoaspis miles hunting after the springtails. That's great! Well... not really for the springtails... But this proves that they are still in numbers, active and feeding!
My mom did use some spray. Don't know what kind. I don't live in the uk so don't know if we have that stuff over here. She said that the hypoaspis did help a lot tho. But i think there are just sooooo many bloodlice in her chicken den that it will take a while.

I am glad things seem to be going in the right direction love, I think you will be rid of those horrid mites in no time. Do keep us posted, I hate parasites and if I had my way, all types of them would be wiped off the face of the earth! They serve no purpose except to be a bloody nuisance.
I will find the link for you very shortly which gives details of the sprays which are now available here for chicken houses and hopefully your mum will be able to order some if it is not what she is using already. Thanks for the update.

It seems like these mites don't have plans to go away. There have been hypoaspis mites in there. There are still a few around. They have springtails to eat so i think a small colony is still in there. I see one now and then hunting in the feeding dish. There are probably more in there since it's a big tank for a super tiny mite and they are night crawlers.
But the snail still has mites on it. And not all snails, nope, just one. Always that same snail! I inspect them multiple times a week when i noticed these white buggers again this week. It's as if they just come and go somehow. Haven't seen one for months aaaand there they are again. I don't know what to do further. I bathed the snail and washed the 2 mites i saw off. For now i haven't seen others on this snail. I can't just buy an other 30€ package of hypoaspis. They aren't cheap. The snail doesn't seem to be bothered to much. She eats, slides around and sleeps on all different spots.

These are proving a bugger to get rid of aren't they love? I am glad the little snaily isn't bothered about them and is still carrying on with and enjoying life, still you want to be rid of them. Please keep us updated.

Mites!!!!

I too once had a snail who always seemed to have 2 mites at once. I'd wash them off, bathe him in dilute green tea (there's word on the street that it helps a bit if the mite problem is not severe), rinse and repeat. Eventually he had no mites. I had him in quarantine as long as he had them though, but he was a Grandpa aged snail who didn't care about the young snails and their parties, and lived mostly on his own even in a big tank.

Did you use regular green tea like from teabags? I could put this snail in quarantine since i have 3 spare tanks again. So far as i've seen, the other snails don't have any mites. I also flushed them off under a running tab. How do you bathe them in that tea? Like boil water, set the tea, cool it down and then a small bottom so they slide in it?

Yes Eibhlin, except I also dilute the tea to be safer. I use the simplest green tea I can find, no spices etc. Sometimes snails will sit down and gulp it, sometimes they just want out of the dish.

I just gave that snail a green tea bath. She woke up quite fast when i placed her in it. She crawled around a bit and then something gross was left behind. I have no clue what it is. Maybe some dried up slime that was on her body. I did look like some worm/parasite but it didn't move. I flushed it trough the toilet right after taking the picture to be safe that it doesn't drop on something or my cats get to it. I don't even know if a parasite that size would be able to live in a snail. Somehow it get the idea that the snail isn't doing to well. She was quite deep in her shell asleep when i picked her up. She is in a separate little tank now away from the others. I checked them as well and they didn't seem to have any mites.

I really can't get this out of my head. What if my snails have parasites. I don't want them to be a threat to my cats! I hope anyone knows if this could be even possible. Snails an carry lungworm but only larvea stage and i don't think they can be this big. It makes me a bit paranoid tho.
