Mauno has a tiny passenger. I wonder how it's like being that small, just having been born, learning to use that tiny foot - and you climb onto someone just like you, only huge! The little fulica was trying to woo the lovely margie, when I threw in some carrots and other vegs. Neither of them appreciated my timing at all!

Thank you for these adorable photos Etana love, they are so cute. I often wonder how tiny creatures can possibly survive as there doesn't seem enough room for all their little insides. I agree it must seem strange to see an enormous one of you. He is probably hoping he is going to be as big one day bless him. Oh dear, naughty mummy put food in at exactly the wrong time LOL!

Yeah Jo, it is indeed one of the wonders of nature. Everything that the little snail needs is in mini size under that shell so light it is see-through. If you look real close, you can see the heart beat even without using a flashlight, and the food moving in the intestine.
And the hugest fattest snail is still exactly like the new little baby, only he's learned stuff on top of the instincts he was born with (and he can breed).
So beautiful and strange and it's a privilege to get to see it in our own pets.

That's so cute Etana love, if I have any that small I think I will try and have a peek. What wonderous little creatures they are, I love them so much. It is lovely to watch them when they grow up and wise up, I agree, and when they start thinking of making baby snailies lol! I think it is wonderful how they have no fear of the older snailies, they just rely on them for help and they usually get it. We are indeed privileged to have these little loves as our pets.

I returned the pear shaped hamster house into the big snail tank, and everyone seems to remember it from when they were small enough to fit inside. They also keep pushing it around the tank, into the flower pots and the big cave. I'm going to embarrass Maija by showing you all how tangled up she got with it today. Click for big version. She made some very annoyed facial expressions and gave me a bubble when I finally pulled her out. She wasn't badly stuck and could have gotten out by herself, it just seems she maybe was too sleepy to. Not pictured: Snails having some rotten, fermented banana and then drunkenly crashing into each other. Whoops.

That is a great photo Etana love, mine sometimes go to sleep on their back too and when I move them I get sworn at when I try to help. Such gratitude lol! It is amazing what they remember, there is far more to these lovely little creatures than we know. I love it when they make faces too and blow a bubble. I know people think it is just a noise they make when moved but I honestly think it is a reprimand. Haha, I have never seen mine they have eaten fermented fruit, I hope they don't get headaches with their hangovers Hugs JO xx

Well they certainly foam when they're sitting in place but bothered, so it's definitely not just a reaction to being moved. Also some snails don't mind being moved at all! I just found interesting info about how snails use their (relatively simple in the animal world) neural network very efficiently. Would you believe, fresh water snails need to use only one neuron for knowing they found food, and one more for knowing whether they're hungry enough to eat, and that's enough to make a complete, complex decision about starting to eat? Now to think that they have thousands more neurons all around their bodies and they have many ganglia where the neural density is much higher, and we don't know how efficiently those are used. Didn't I always said they seem to really use their potential? Lol! Seriously though I am still amazed to see them solving little snailular problems as they go on about their lives in the tank. Except for when they're too tired like poor Maija here.

I think it is a reprimand too love and the grumpiest of mine is Sidders (Sidney). He really doesn't like being picked up and neither does Alfie. Thank y for sharing that wonderful piece of info Etana hunni, they are truly amazing little creatures. I could do with something like that to tell me when I am really hungry and don't just feel like eating which is a totally different thing LOL! I am going to show my ignorance now Etana love, what is a ganglia please? Maybe they are like us honey, we only use a fraction of our brains apparently, maybe it is the same for snailies. I love to watch them also, a couple were getting really romantic last night so I think I may have to look out for eggs.

Ganglia (singular: ganglion) are big clusters of nerve cells. Snails don't have a brain in their heads, but instead these ganglia in their body. They're for their eyes and other senses, internal organ functions, etc - we don't know quite everything about them yet.

Thanks for explaining that to me Etana love, they are indeed strange little creatures but they probably think the same about us LOL! They always look as if they are having a think about something and it is enlightening to know that they don't have a brain. They look as if they are thinking sometimes, which they are of course, but not in the way we would.

Haha yes I bet snails think we're strange! I agree that they can look very thoughtful. I suppose that while us humans experience that our thoughts reside inside our heads, snails maybe feel their thoughts elsewhere. What they may be thinking of is a different question altogether. Though the decisions they make seem quite clever sometimes. Like with Gaius my biggest guy, when he tries to find a spot where he can just sit and reach food and water. I move the dishes around so that he has to move, to his disapproval!

I think that is very probable Etana love, they feel thoughts rather than think them They must think we are a funny love, with two feet instead of one, much more expensive to buy shoes for LOL! Just as it is with us, you get the lazy ones who want everything accessible in their bedside table draw so they don't have to move so to speak and others will happily walk around the tank until they get where they want to go. Haha, I bet he isn't happy with you when you move the bowls around hunni, I bet that has caused a few grumpy faces Hugs JO xx

Here's also for Zorst. Look what's become of Iisakki's baby! He's over twice the size of his late old momdad! He is called Darius. He has Iisakki's face and a lovely ivory complexion. He seems to be heading for #1 in tank social hierarchy, he has many fans who try to woo him and he just crawls away, not warming up at all. Gaius is still bigger but seems very oblivious to the fact that he could just sit on everyone and no one could fight him. Darius on the other hand might be aware that he is very big and handsome.

He is gorgeous Etana love. No visit to the beauty parlour for him, he just couldn't be improved upon LOL! The same as people I am afraid hunni, good looking usually means a bit standoffish. I am sure they read our posts about them at night too. They make sure we hare all asleep, log on a talk to each other Hugs JO xx

As discussed in Montezuma's thread, here's Gaius being very stretchy and happy that he could reach the egg without having to drag his shell out of the flower pot hide.
